The International network of UNESCO Chairs in Communication (Orbicom) organize annually their meeting and symposium alternatively in France and on other continents, either Asia, or America (konferensi internasional di Spayol: 4 artikel).

In this 2019 annual meeting and symposium conducted in Strasbourg, France, five COSDEV researchers (Andi Faisal Bakti, Anna Agustina, Ahmad Badari Burhan, Edie Toet Hendratno, and Helpris Estaswara) took part. The researchers presented their works on “Freedom of Expression in the digital age.”
Three research results were presented in this event. Research had been conducted in collaboration between Edie Toet Hendratno, Faculty of Law, and F Andi Faisal Bakti, Anna Agustina, Umar Halim, Helpris Estaswara, and Ahmad Badari Burhan, Faculty of Communication, Universitas Pancasila, Indonesia. Researches presented were limited to the theme of the symposium, that is: “Freedom of Expression in the Digital age: From Information to Artificial Intelligence,” Université de Strasbourg, France.
Andi Faisal Bakti served as a keynote speaker on “The Importance of the Active Reception Model in Maritime and Coastal Areas for Sulawesi Island” in an International Conference held at Universitas Halu Oleo in cooperation with COSDEV, Kendari, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on August 28, 2019.
Andi Faisal Bakti, along with Anna Agustina, Mashadi Said, Umar Halim, and Ririt Yuniar visited a Korean University, namely the Kyungdong University, and presented the COSDEV program and sharing their partnership schemes on research concerning SDGs 17th issues. This visit was conducted in August 23, 2019, with a follow-up to be developed.
Martriana Ponimin Said presented research results in her paper: “Political Campaign #2019GantiPresiden, Study on Early Voters in the Pramuka Island,” at a Conference on Communication and New Media Studies held at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, Indonesia, on March 13-14, 2019.
Fitria Angelica presented her research findings on “Capital Contestation in the Social Media Arena: ‘Determining Environmental Issues on the @kemenlhk Instagram Account,” in the Conference on Communication, Culture, and Media Studies held at Universitas Islam Indonesia in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, on April 18, 2019.
Faridhian Anshari, Aprilianti Pratiwi, and Retor Kaligis presented their research findings: “The Action of Football Supporters in Sustaining Sports Facilities (Case Study of The #JagaGBK Campaign By Jakmania of Persija Jakarta),” in the Conference on Communication, Culture, and Media Studies held at Universitas Islam Indonesia in Yogyakarta, Central Java, on April 18, 2019.
Aprilianti Pratiwi presented research results on “Narrative Analysis of Peasant Movement,” in the Conference on Communication, Culture, and Media Studies held at Universitas Islam Indonesia in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, on April 18, 2019.
Edie Toet Hendratno and Anna Agustina presented a paper on: “Indonesian Media Law, Journalism and Journalist Freedom in Hate Climate”. Presented in an International symposium “Freedom of Expression in the digital age: From information to artificial intelligence”, Université de Strasbourg, France, May 13-15, 2019.
Ahmad Badari Burhan and Helpris Estaswara presented a research paper on “Strategic Politics of Facebook-Based Farmers’ Community in Brebes, Indonesia,” in the International Symposium on “Freedom of Expression in the Digital Age: From Information to Artificial Intelligence,” Université de Strasbourg, France, May 13-15, 2019.

Umar Halim and Muhamad Rosit presented their research paper on: “Problematics of Shifting Generation on Political Leadership After 2019 Indonesia’s Election,” in a national event organized by the Association of Communication Higher Education in Indonesia (Aspikom) in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia, on July 24-25, 2019.
Cici Eka Iswahyuningtyas presented a research paper on: “Family Communication Patterns and Decision-Making Processes in the Rite of Eating Together,” in a national event organized by the Association of Communication Higher Education in Indonesia (Aspikom) in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia, on July 24-25, 2019.
Faridhian Anshari presented a research paper on: “Understanding Sport Media Business Strategy in News Aggregator Labels in Indonesia (Case Study of Sports News Portal BolaBanget.id.id),” in a national event organized by the Association of Communication Higher Education in Indonesia (Aspikom) in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia, on July 24-25, 2019.
Aprilianti Pratiwi presented a research paper on “Agrarian Conflict in Indonesia (Communication Perspective),” in the Asia Conference on Humanities, Industry, and Technology for Society organized by the Dr.Soetomo University, on July 30, 2019.
Riza Darmaputra presented a research paper on “The Use of the Internet as a Medium of Communication for Villagers and Local Government” in an International Conference organized by Universitas Halu Oleo in cooperation with COSDEV, Kendari, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This event was held on August 27, 2019.
Anna Agustina presented a research paper on: “Visualizing Environmental Journalism and Environmental Journalists in Indonesia,” in an International Communication Association Regional Conference organized by the Association of Communication Higher Education in Indonesia (Aspikom) in Bali, October 16, 2019.
Anna Agustina served as a chair and participant of an international seminar on: “Communication National and International Conference” organized by the Communication Scholar Association of Indonesia (ISKI) and held in Banda Aceh, November 12-14, 2019.
Anna Agustina presented research findings in partnership with the Ministry for the Empowerment of Women and Children Protection (Kementerian Pemberdayaan Perempuan dan Perlindungan Anak) on the security of children related to the negative portrayal of children in television programs. This presentation was conducted within an national event for the dissemination of research on Child Security from Television Portrayal in Universitas Pancasila, on November 25, 2019.
– Muhamad Rosit, in collaboration with Gun Gun Heryanto and Iding Rosyidin, presented a research paper on: “Political Literacy in Millennials” in a National Seminar on Political communication. This event was organized by Universitas Pancasila on November 22, 2019.
Alvito Deannova and Selvi Septiyani presented research findings on “Journalism from News Makers Perspectives: News Curators, News Aggregators and Journalists’ Perspectives,” in an International Conference on Media and Society 2019 (ICMAS 2019) organized by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, on November 26-27, 2019.

2018 Overview

In 2019, Andi Faisal Bakti presented a recommendation for a poverty alleviation program in Brebes, in partnership with COSDEV, following a research conducted in the Bantaeng district. The presentation and visit were conducted in a one-week period, on March 10-14, 2019. This was attended by scholars of communications, researchers and lectures from different universities.

“International Conference on Maritime Development” held at Universitas Halu Oleo in cooperation with COSDEV, Kendari, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, on August 28, 2019.
“Media Literacy on Hoax Busting and Digital Hygiene Trainings” for students, lecturers, and the general public, conducted in partnership with the UNESCO Chair (COSDEV) Office and the Indonesian Journalist Alliance (Aliansi Jurnalis Indonesia − AJI);
“Social Entrepreneur Workshops” conducted for youths and the general public in partnership with l’Institut français d’Indonésie (IFI) in Jakarta and the French Embassy in Jakarta;
“Community Building” activities on media literacy were conducted for elementary and secondary students, in partnership with the government of the district of Pulau Seribu, Indonesia.
“Sustainable Living Program” for the village population of Kiarasari, in the district of Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, on “Risk Communication,” focusing on disaster mitigation in response to several earthquakes in that Province and its surroundings

2018 Overview

Key conferences and workshops hosted by the Chair

Andi Faisal Bakti presented research results on Brebes Poverty alleviation in 2018 to the government of the Brebes district. The results showed that Brebes first had to identify successful solutions implemented in other districts. The case study on lessons learned from the Bantaeng district in formulating a solution to poverty issues could help Brebes adopt and adapt the process to its own circumstances. The presentation was held on October 18, 2018. This was attended by scholars of communication, activists, leaders and staff of Brebes.

Anna Agustina presented research results on the “Redefinition of Layers of Media Stakeholders” in 2018. The paper was presentated in an international conference conducted in Universitas Soedirman, Central Java, Indonesia. This paper was also published in Acta Diurna Journal, Vol. 2.
